In October 2025, high-ranking government and military officials, VIPs, and key stakeholders from Tanzania and the region gathered to celebrate the official inauguration of the Nyumbu-Streit Armored Vehicle Facility at the Tanzania Automotive Technology Centre (TATC) in Kibaha. The ceremony marked a defining moment for the country’s industrial and defense sectors, demonstrating Tanzania’s commitment to expanding local manufacturing capacity and technological expertise.

The event followed the signing of the joint venture agreement in September 2025 between Streit Group, a global leader in armored vehicle manufacturing headquartered in the UAE, and TATC-Nyumbu. The partnership was established to manufacture, repair, and sell armored vehicles, aiming to enhance national security, develop local technical skills, and position Tanzania as a regional hub for defense production.

Distinguished guest list

The inauguration ceremony attracted a distinguished lineup of attendees, including Hon. Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax, Minister for Defence and National Service; General Jacob John Mkunda, Chief of Defence Forces; and Lieutenant General (Rtd) Wyajonea Mathew Kisamba, TATC Board Chair, among others. They were joined by Streit Group CEO Guerman Goutorov. Their presence highlighted the strategic significance of the Nyumbu-Streit initiative for Tanzania’s defense and automotive industries.

The Nyumbu-Streit facility is designed to strengthen Tanzania’s technological and industrial capabilities, with the initial focus on military vehicles and plans to expand into institutional vehicles and exports across the East African market. The joint venture also emphasized skills transfer and workforce development, with young Tanzanians gaining access to training in advanced automotive and armored vehicle technologies.

Supporting industrial growth

Speaking at the ceremony, officials highlighted the broader significance of the project. General Jacob John Mkunda described the venture as a strategic investment in national security and technological self-reliance, while Lieutenant General Kisamba noted that it would provide practical learning opportunities and employment for Tanzanian engineers and technicians. Guerman Goutorov emphasised Tanzania’s advantages as a regional base for armored vehicle production and distribution across East and Central Africa, reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting the country’s industrial growth.

The Nyumbu-Streit facility builds on TATC Nyumbu’s long-standing history as a centre of excellence in automotive research, vehicle design, repair, and quality assurance, dating back to its formal establishment in 1985. Over the years, TATC has partnered with international technology providers, including Timoney Technology Group of Ireland, to train engineers and implement capital projects in the automotive sector.

The launch of the Nyumbu-Streit facility represented more than the opening of a production plant. It symbolized Tanzania’s ambitions to develop self-reliant defense capabilities, create skilled employment, and position the country as a regional leader in armored vehicle manufacturing. By combining international expertise with local talent, the joint venture showcases Tanzania’s commitment to industrialization, innovation, and regional security.
